The book currently being read, chosen by our DMC Alumni Book Club members, is Hag-Seed by Margaret Atwood — an internationally acclaimed author.

Goodreads says:

When Felix is removed from his role as artistic director of the Makeshiweg Theatre Festival by his cunning assistant and longtime rival, his production of The Tempest collapses, leaving him devastated. Living in isolation in rural Ontario—accompanied only by the imagined presence of his daughter Miranda, who died twelve years earlier—Felix begins to devise a plan for revenge.

He eventually accepts a role teaching “Literacy Through Theatre” at the nearby Fletcher County Correctional Institution. As he works with the inmates, circumstances bring his enemies within reach. With digital effects, their own interpretations of the text, and the help of a professional actress, the Fletcher County Correctional Players prepare to recreate The Tempest. Naturally, they relate most to Caliban. Yet Felix has one more twist in store—forcing his old rivals into an immersive, unexpected version of Shakespeare’s play.

NB: In the Goodreads review, the prison acting troupe is incorrectly referred to as the Burgess Correctional Players.

Book Club FAQs

How are the books selected?

The first book is pre-selected to begin the club. After that, alumni members vote on a shortlist of options and the winning book becomes the next selection.

How do I get the books?

Members are responsible for purchasing, borrowing, or downloading the selected books themselves.

How often will books be read and what is the time commitment?

We read one book every two months. Around 30 minutes of reading per week is usually enough to keep up. Participation in discussions is optional — join at your own pace.

Will the book club meet in person?

No — the book club is fully online. This allows alumni living around the world to participate and share diverse perspectives.

How many people can join?

There is no limit. Any DMC alumnus can join — the more, the better!

Is there any cost to participate?

Participation is free for DMC alumni. Members only need to purchase or access the books we read.

How do book club discussions work?

A moderator will manage the discussion forum where members interact online. They will post questions, share articles, and facilitate open conversation. Members can also share their own insights anytime.
